About CSS Minify

CSS Minify removes comments and collapses whitespace outside of strings. Property names are not renamed, reordered or merged, and text inside quotes is copied unchanged.

A comma inside a function keeps a single space after it, so rgb(1, 2, 3) stays readable. Spaces that keep two values apart, such as 0 auto or calc(100% - 2px), stay as one space. Other spaces next to braces and colons are removed.

An unclosed string or comment is reported at the character where it starts. Swap sends the result to CSS Beautify.

Frequently asked questions

What does CSS minify remove?

It removes comments and extra whitespace outside strings. A space after a comma inside parentheses, such as in rgb(1, 2, 3), stays a single space. Spaces that separate two values, such as 0 auto, also stay.

Does minify rename or merge properties?

No. Property names, selectors and values are not shortened, merged or reordered. margin-top stays margin-top, and two declarations are never combined into one.

Why can the minified text differ from what I pasted?

Spaces next to braces, colons and semicolons are dropped, and the semicolon before a closing brace is omitted. A comment between two words becomes one space so the words do not merge. Function commas are normalized to one space.

Is the text I paste uploaded anywhere?

No. Minifying runs in your browser and the text you paste is never uploaded, logged or stored. Google Analytics records page views and feature use, never content.
