XML

About XML Escape

XML Escape rewrites the characters that must not appear raw in XML text. Ampersands become &, less-than signs become < and greater-than signs become >. Apostrophes and double quotes become ' and " unless you turn those options off.

A C0 control other than tab, line feed or carriage return cannot be stored in XML 1.0. The conversion stops on the first one and points at that character instead of writing a numeric reference. Letters, emoji and every other character stay as typed. No other named entities are written.

Escaping runs in your browser. Swap sends the result to XML Unescape so you can check that decoding brings the original text back.

Frequently asked questions

What does XML escaping change?

It replaces ampersands, less-than signs and greater-than signs with &, < and > so the text can sit in an XML document. With the default options an apostrophe becomes ' and a double quote becomes ".

Which characters does XML refuse to store?

XML 1.0 cannot store C0 controls other than tab, line feed and carriage return, such as a null or a bell. The tool stops on the first one and selects it. Those characters are not turned into numeric references.

Can I leave apostrophes and quotes as they are?

Turn Escape apostrophe or Escape double quote off when you are writing element text and want those characters left raw. Ampersands and both angle brackets are always escaped. The defaults stay on because attribute values need the entities.

Does this write any named entities besides the five predefined ones?

No other names are written. A non-breaking space stays a non-breaking space, and an emoji stays an emoji. Only &, <, >, " and ' are produced.

Is the text I paste uploaded anywhere?

No. Escaping runs in your browser and the text you paste is never uploaded, logged or stored. Google Analytics records page views and feature use, never content.
