About Markdown to DOCX

Markdown to DOCX turns Markdown into a Word document as you type. The preview shows the page as Word lays it out: real headings, bulleted and numbered lists, footnotes and tables. Download the .docx, or copy for Word and paste straight into an open document.

Tables are built for Word. Every cell has a border, the header row is shaded and bold and repeats on each new page, rows never split across a page break, and the column alignment from your Markdown carries over. Headings use Word’s own Heading 1 to Heading 6 styles, so the Navigation pane and a table of contents work straight away.

Everything runs in your browser, so your Markdown is never uploaded. Use Options for A4 or US Letter paper, Calibri or Aptos, and a full grid or light lines for tables. Images with a web address are embedded when their host allows it and kept as a link otherwise; raw HTML becomes formatted text, since a Word document cannot hold HTML.

Frequently asked questions

Why do tables lose their borders when I paste HTML into Word?

Word gives a pasted table its plain default style, which has no borders, unless each cell carries its own border. The downloaded .docx and Copy for Word both set borders, header shading and padding on every cell, so tables look the same in Word as in the preview.

Is my Markdown uploaded anywhere?

No. The Word document is built in your browser and saved straight to your device. Images you reference by URL are loaded by your browser from their own host, as on any web page. Google Analytics records page views and feature use, never content.

Which Markdown features carry over to Word?

Headings, bold, italic, strikethrough, links, inline code, code blocks, block quotes, bulleted, numbered and nested lists, task lists with checkboxes, tables with column alignment, footnotes, definition lists, horizontal rules and images. Links to headings, such as #summary, become links inside the document.

Does the file open in Google Docs, Pages and LibreOffice?

Yes. It is a standard .docx with column widths stored for every table, so tables keep their shape in Google Docs, Pages and LibreOffice as well as Word. The text uses Calibri, which every copy of Microsoft Office includes; turn on Aptos font in Options to match the newest Word default.

What is the difference between Download .docx and Copy for Word?

Download .docx saves a complete document with its own page size, fonts and styles. Copy for Word puts formatted text on the clipboard, so pasting into a document that is already open keeps tables, borders and lists while taking on that document’s fonts and heading styles.

Why is an image a link instead of a picture?

Some image hosts do not let other sites read their images, so the browser cannot place them inside the file. Those images become a link with their alt text, and the preview shows the same placeholder before you download.
