About HTML Escape

HTML Escape rewrites the characters that can change how markup is read. Ampersands, less-than signs and greater-than signs always become &, < and >. With Escape quotes on, a double quote becomes " and an apostrophe becomes '. Letters, emoji and line breaks stay as they are.

The default covers element text and quoted attributes. Turn Escape quotes off when you only need the three markup characters encoded and want quotation marks left readable. Characters that are not in that set, including accented letters, are never rewritten as named entities.

Escaping runs in your browser and the text you paste is never uploaded. Swap sends the result to HTML Unescape so you can check that decoding restores the original characters.

Frequently asked questions

What does HTML escaping do?

It rewrites characters that would otherwise be read as markup. An ampersand becomes &, a less-than sign becomes < and a greater-than sign becomes >. With Escape quotes on, a double quote becomes " and an apostrophe becomes '. Emoji and line breaks stay as they are.

Which characters are always escaped?

Ampersand, less-than and greater-than. Those three are encoded even when Escape quotes is off, because each of them can start or close markup. Quotes are encoded only while that option is on.

Does this turn letters into named entities?

Letters, emoji and line breaks stay as themselves. Encoding writes &, < and >, and with Escape quotes on it also writes " and '. It does not turn an e acute into é.

When should Escape quotes be turned off?

Turn it off when you want quotation marks left readable in element text. Ampersand, less-than and greater-than stay encoded either way. Attribute values still need the wrapping quote character encoded, so leave the option on for those.

Is the text I paste uploaded anywhere?

No. Escaping runs in your browser and the text you paste is never uploaded, logged or stored. Google Analytics records page views and feature use, never content.
