Paste or type anything. Quotes, backslashes and line breaks become Java and C# escapes as you type.

About Java / .NET Escape

Java / .NET Escape writes the inside of a double-quoted string that is valid in Java and in a C# regular string. The languages do not share every escape, so this direction emits only the overlap: backslash, double quote, newline, carriage return, tab, backspace and form feed. Every other character below U+0020 becomes \u00XX.

Wrap in double quotes adds the surrounding quotes so the output is a complete literal. Escape non-ASCII writes each code unit above U+007F as \uXXXX, and an emoji becomes two escapes. With that option off, accented letters and emoji stay as themselves.

One tool covers both directions because that shared subset is the useful part: the escaped text pastes into either language, and Unescape reads Java and C# forms back. Escaping runs in your browser. Swap checks the round trip.

Frequently asked questions

What does Java / .NET Escape produce?

It rewrites text as the inside of a double-quoted Java or C# string. Backslashes and double quotes gain a backslash, line breaks become \n, and other characters below U+0020 become \u00XX. The result is valid in both languages.

Which escapes are in the shared subset?

Backslash, double quote, newline, carriage return, tab, backspace and form feed, plus \u00XX for the other controls below U+0020. Apostrophes, \a, \v, \0, \x and \U are not emitted, because a Java string does not use all of them. Unescape still accepts those C# forms.

When should I escape non-ASCII characters?

When the literal will be saved in a file that is not UTF-8, or read by a tool that expects ASCII only. The option writes each code unit above U+007F as \uXXXX, so an emoji becomes two escapes. Java and C# read that pair back as the same character.

Does Wrap in double quotes change the escaping?

It adds one double quote on each side after escaping, so the output is a complete literal. The quotes around the result are not themselves escaped. Leave it off to drop the text into a string you already opened.

Is the text I paste uploaded anywhere?

No. Escaping runs in your browser and the text you paste is never uploaded, logged or stored. Google Analytics records page views and feature use, never content.
