Escape & Encode
Paste a Java or C# string, with or without its quotes. Shared escapes and C# hex escapes are decoded as you type.
Java / .NET Unescape decodes a Java or C# regular string back to text. It accepts the shared escapes, a \u escape of four hex digits, and the C# forms \x (one to four hex digits), \U (eight hex digits, at most U+10FFFF), \a, \v and \0.
Paste the literal with or without its surrounding double quotes. When the trimmed input starts and ends with a double quote and is one literal, the outer quotes are removed. A bad escape is reported at the backslash, and an emoji written as a surrogate pair is joined back into one character.
Decoding runs in your browser, so the literal never leaves your device. Octal escapes such as Java \101 are not part of this set and are reported as unknown. Swap sends the decoded text back to Escape.
It reverses string escapes. \n becomes a line break, \" becomes a double quote, \\ becomes one backslash, and \uXXXX becomes the character it names. Use it to read a literal copied from Java or C# source.
No. If the input, ignoring space at the ends, starts and ends with a double quote and those quotes enclose one literal, they are removed before decoding. Otherwise the text is decoded as the inside of the string, and a raw double quote stays a double quote.
Besides the shared Java set, Unescape accepts \a (bell), \v (vertical tab), \0 (null), \x with one to four hex digits, and \U with eight hex digits when the code point is at most U+10FFFF. A \' apostrophe escape is decoded as well. An emoji written with \U comes back as one character.
\u escapes decoded?Characters above U+FFFF, including most emoji, are two UTF-16 units. Escape with Escape non-ASCII writes them as a pair such as \ud83c\udf89. Unescape reads each unit and the pair is one character again. Hex digits may be upper or lower case.
The output is replaced by a short problem note that names the issue, such as an unknown escape or a \u escape with fewer than four hex digits, and the Jump button selects that backslash. The tool does not guess a character.
No. Verbatim strings (an @ before the quote) and Java text blocks keep most backslashes as ordinary characters. Paste a regular double-quoted literal, or the inside of one.
No. Decoding runs in your browser and the text you paste is never uploaded, logged or stored. Google Analytics records page views and feature use, never content.
Escape text into a Java or C# string literal as you type: quotes, backslashes, line breaks and controls. Runs in your browser; your text is never uploaded.
Turn text into a valid JSON string literal, or decode one back to plain text.
Percent-encode text for a URL, or decode a percent-encoded string.
Encode text as Base64, or decode Base64 back to text.
Escape text for HTML, or decode entities back to characters.
