JSON Unescape decodes a JSON string back into the text it represents. Escaped quotes and backslashes, \n line breaks, \t tabs and \uXXXX escapes, including the surrogate pairs used for emoji, become real characters as you type.
Paste the string with or without its surrounding double quotes. When something cannot be decoded, such as an unknown escape or a \u escape with fewer than four hex digits, the tool names the problem and points to its exact line and column instead of guessing.
Decoding runs entirely in your browser, so private payloads never leave your device. Swap sends the decoded text to JSON Escape when you need to encode it again.
It reverses JSON string escaping: \n becomes a real line break, \" becomes a double quote, \\ becomes a single backslash and \uXXXX becomes the character it names. Use it to read a string copied from a log, an API response or a configuration file.
No. If the input, ignoring leading and trailing whitespace, starts and ends with a double quote, it is read as a complete JSON string literal. Otherwise, including when a comma or colon follows the closing quote, everything you paste is treated as the inside of the string.
Characters outside the Basic Multilingual Plane, such as most emoji, are written in JSON as two escapes called a surrogate pair, for example \ud83c\udf89. The tool joins each pair back into the single character it stands for. Hex digits may be upper or lower case.
The output is replaced by a short problem note that names the issue, such as an unknown escape like \q or a \u escape with fewer than four hex digits, with its line and column. The Jump button selects the exact characters in the input so you can fix them.
Inside a quoted JSON string an unescaped double quote ends the string, so anything after it is not part of the value. This usually means two strings or a whole key and value were pasted. Remove the outer quotes, or escape the inner quote as \".
