About SQL Unescape

SQL Unescape reads a SQL string literal back into plain text. Two apostrophes in a row become one apostrophe. If the trimmed input starts and ends with a single quote, that one pair of surrounding quotes is removed first.

With Escape backslashes on, two backslashes become one and a backslash before an apostrophe becomes an apostrophe. A backslash with nothing after it is reported at that character. Other backslash sequences, such as a backslash before the letter n, stay as written.

Decoding runs in your browser and the text you paste is never uploaded. Swap sends the decoded text to SQL Escape when you need to encode it again.

Frequently asked questions

What does unescaping a SQL literal do?

It reverses the apostrophe escaping used in a SQL string. Two apostrophes become one. Use it to read a literal copied from a query, a log or a seed file.

Do I need to include the surrounding quotes?

No. If the trimmed input starts and ends with a single quote, that pair is removed and the inside is decoded. Otherwise the whole input is decoded and surrounding spaces stay.

How are backslashes decoded?

Only when Escape backslashes is on. Two backslashes become one, and a backslash followed by an apostrophe becomes an apostrophe. A final backslash with no character after it is a problem. A backslash before any other character is left in place.

Will the decoded text be safe to paste back into every engine?

No. This tool prepares a literal and does not make a concatenated query safe against every engine. Decoding only recovers the characters that were inside one string.

Is the text I paste uploaded anywhere?

No. Decoding runs in your browser and the text you paste is never uploaded, logged or stored. Google Analytics records page views and feature use, never content.
