About XML Unescape

XML Unescape decodes the five predefined XML entities: &, <, >, " and '. Decimal references such as A and hexadecimal references such as 🎉 become the character they name, including emoji.

A name this tool does not recognize, such as  , is left exactly as written. A reference that does not end with a semicolon stays literal too. A numeric reference above U+10FFFF, or one that names a surrogate, is reported at the ampersand instead of being guessed.

Decoding runs in your browser. Swap sends the text to XML Escape when you need to encode it again.

Frequently asked questions

Which XML entities are decoded?

Only &, <, >, " and ', plus decimal A and hexadecimal 🎉 references. Names are case-sensitive, so & is not an ampersand. One pass is decoded: < becomes the text <, not a less-than sign.

What happens to an entity name this tool does not know?

It stays in the output character for character, including the ampersand and the semicolon.   is not turned into a space. A reference missing its semicolon, such as &amp or &#65, stays literal as well.

Which numeric character references are rejected?

A reference greater than U+10FFFF, or a surrogate in U+D800 through U+DFFF, is a problem at the ampersand. Leading zeros are allowed. Every other code point, including a null from , is decoded. Hex digits and the x marker may be upper or lower case.

Do the escape options change unescaping?

Unescape has no options. " and ' are always decoded, even if you had turned quote escaping off on the way in. The escape options only affect XML Escape.

Is the XML I paste sent to a server?

No. Decoding runs in your browser and the XML you paste is never uploaded, logged or stored. Google Analytics records page views and feature use, never content.
