About YAML to JSON

YAML to JSON reads a practical subset: block mappings, block sequences, nested indentation, plain scalars, single- and double-quoted scalars, JSON-style flow [ ] and { } collections, and | literal and > folded block scalars.

Anchors, aliases, tags and directives are rejected at the character that introduces them, and a tab used as indentation is rejected. Indent JSON is on by default and writes two-space JSON; turn it off for one compact line.

Parsing runs in your browser as you type. Swap sends the JSON to the YAML side. Comments in the YAML are not kept, so do not rely on them surviving a round trip.

Frequently asked questions

Which YAML does this accept?

Block mappings and sequences, nested indentation, plain scalars, single- and double-quoted scalars, flow collections written as JSON, and literal or folded block scalars. It is a subset, not the whole YAML language.

What does Indent JSON change?

When it is on, the JSON is written with a two-space indent. When it is off, the same value is written with JSON.stringify and no indent, as a single line.

Why are anchors, aliases, tags and directives rejected?

Those features (&, *, ! and %) are outside the subset this tool parses. The problem points at the character so you can remove it. Tabs used to indent are rejected for the same reason: indentation must be spaces.

Is the text I paste uploaded anywhere?

No. Parsing runs in your browser and the text you paste is never uploaded or logged. Google Analytics records page views and feature use, never content.
